Watch Case Size Guide: Will Your Watch Actually Fit?
A watch box that is 2mm too small is useless. Here is exactly what to measure, and which measurement most people get wrong.
The measurement that matters is not case diameter
Almost every watch listing leads with case diameter — 38mm, 40mm, 42mm. It is the number people quote, and it is the wrong one for checking whether a watch fits a case.
What determines fit is the strap circumference: the size of the loop the watch makes when it is closed. That loop has to slide over the cushion. A slim 38mm dress watch on a stiff leather strap can have a smaller closed loop than a 44mm diver on a supple rubber one.
How to measure strap circumference in 30 seconds
Fasten the watch as if you were wearing it, on the hole or link you normally use. Lay it on its side so it forms a ring. Run a soft tape measure or a strip of paper around the inside of that ring and read off the length.
That figure is your strap circumference. For the Kollektion cushion the working minimum is 160mm — below that the loop will not pass over the cushion without stretching the strap.
The other three numbers, and why they matter
Once circumference clears, check these for comfortable clearance rather than pass/fail.
- Lug-to-lug: the length from the tip of one lug to the other. This is the true footprint of the watch and determines whether it sits flat in the compartment without the lugs riding up the walls.
- Case thickness: a 15mm-thick diver needs more vertical room than a 7mm dress watch. Check the internal depth of the case, not the external height.
- Case diameter: still useful as a sanity check on width, but the least decisive of the four.
Typical fits
For reference, a 40mm steel sports watch on a bracelet closes to roughly 180–200mm circumference. A 36mm dress watch on a thin leather strap sits nearer 165–180mm. Chunky divers on rubber commonly run past 210mm.

When to size up
If your collection is mostly large divers, or you use thick aftermarket straps, give yourself margin. A cushion that fills the loop snugly is ideal; one that has to be compressed to fit will put lasting tension on the spring bars.
If you are buying for someone else and cannot measure their watch, a case designed around a mid-size cushion is the safe choice — it accommodates far more of the range than a case built tight around one size.
